24th Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep set for
September 15th

The 24th annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, September 15th from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.  Each year thousands of people participate in the Sweep, South Carolina’s largest one-day volunteer litter cleanup of beaches, marshes and waterways.

The Town of Bluffton is proud to again participate in this event by organizing a cleanup based at the Oyster Factory Park located at the end of Wharf Street in Bluffton. All necessary supplies are provided. Anyone with a boat or kayak is encouraged to bring them. Everyone else will cleanup roadside to prevent trash from entering the May River from our streets.

S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources have organized this annual event since 1988. The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy. Once the Sweep is over, the Ocean Conservancy tallies all of the debris data. This data helps us learn the sources of litter so we can stop pollution before it starts.

Anyone can and should participate – individuals, families, schools, youth groups, civic and conservation clubs and businesses. Last year in South Carolina, over 2,500 dedicated volunteers removed 12.5 tons of debris!
